Martin has dedicated most of his life to civil society, launching local projects such as TEDxTartu and the Changemakers Summit, helping to establish national initiatives like the Social Enterprise Network and Civil Society Week, and contributing to international efforts like the Coalition for Democracy Innovation.

As a civic leader, he has been a prominent voice in public discourse – writing for newspapers, giving TV and radio interviews, and speaking at conferences.

Over the past decade he transitioned into strategic roles, serving as chairman of the council of the Estonian Network of Nonprofit Organisations until 2020 and sitting on the councils of the University of Tartu, the Opinion Festival, and several university programs.

For fifteen years Martin served as CEO of the DD Foundation, where he oversaw the creation of the DD Academy student program, the SEIKU social entrepreneurship incubator, the DD StratLab consultancy arm, and the DD Center for Democracy.

He holds a Master’s degree in Communication and is currently pursuing a PhD in Sustainable Transitions.

Martin is a husband, a father, and an avid science fiction fan.

Societal roles

The council is the highest decision-making body of the University of Tartu, responsible for the strategy and budget of the university.

Arvamusfestival (the Estonian Democracy Festival) is an annual discussion event in the middle of Estonia and Martin has been involved with it in many ways since the beginning.

At the University of Tartu there is a Centre focused on empowering the Estonian society to move faster towards a sustainable future.

At the University of Tartu there is a Master’s program focused on training changemakers for the future, Martin has been a program council member since the beginning and has contributed to the design of the program.
